Assessing environmental and sustainability education in times of accountability

The main purpose of the symposium is to highlight the evolutions of the Sustainability Literacy Test (or Sulitest) as a tool supporting ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) and as a material for academic research.
The Rio+20 Conference was a major turning point in the perception of the role education can, and should, play in the construction of a sustainable world with the Rio Declaration for Higher Education (Higher Education Sustainable Initiative, HESI). Chancellors, Presidents, Rectors, Deans and leaders of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and related organizations, acknowledged the responsibility that they bear in the international pursuit of sustainable development.
In this context, a major concern for HEIs is to deliver a sufficient level of knowledge on sustainability to their graduates so they can be aware of these fundamental stakes when they take their decisions. How can HEIs be sure they are producing sustainability literate graduates? The Sulitest aims to provide a tool allowing every HEI to assess the level of sustainability literacy within its student base, applicable all over the world, in any type of HEI, for students studying in all fields and at all levels (Bachelors, Masters, MBAs, PhD).
This is an online open tool, and the registration is free for any HEI. The devotion of more than 200 volunteers and the support of several UN branches (UNESCO, UNEP, UNDP, PRME…) allowed a rapid deployment: today more than 320 HEIs are using the Sulitest in 41 countries.
The UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (Nagoya, Japan, in November 2014) has celebrated the end of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) and set the agenda for ESD in the decade to come. The first activity report of the Sulitest has been presented on this occasion. It opened the research agenda of the Sulitest by presenting the first snapshot of sustainability literacy worldwide. It also launched the work of the community to improve this tool and build the version 2.
The objective of this symposium is to discuss the evolution of the Sulitest towards version 2 and the way it can be used for academic research. During the session, we will welcome feedback from HEIs which are already using the Sulitest and from HEIs which are willing to discover this ESD tool and to join the community by starting to use it.

Évaluation de l’éducation de l’environnement et du développement durable en temps de responsabilité
Le titre: Appui à l’éducation de l’environnement et du développement durable comme levier de l’amélioration de la gouvernance et de la participation citoyenne dans le milieu rural au nord du Maroc (Région TT).

L’approche par appui à l’éducation de l’environnement et du développement durable pour l’amélioration de la gouvernance locale dans les communes rurales au nord du Maroc s’avère un levier très important pour dynamiser la participation citoyenne et renforcer l’implication de la population et des autres acteurs locaux (élu-E-s, ONG, services extérieurs, coopération internationale, etc.) dans la gestion des affaires locales. L’expérience tirée de l’étude menée dans les communes rurales de la Région Tanger-Tétouan (nord du Maroc) est très riche en enseignements. Car tout l’enjeu repose sur la manière (démarche méthodologique et outils d’intervention) avec la quelle l’on pourrait réellement faire de la convergence territoriale un préalable incontournable en vue de renforcer les impératifs de la gouvernance locale, notamment dans le monde rural. L’approche de proximité basée sur l’appui à l’éducation de l’environnement et du développement durable en temps de responsabilité sensibilise la population locale et les autres acteurs à l’urgence de prendre en considération les impératifs du développement durable et ses exigences environnementales. Aussi, est-il intéressant de souligner la portée de l’éducation de l’environnement sur les processus de coordination entre acteurs, l’harmonisation des politiques publiques, l’efficience des Programmes, Projets et Actions (PPA) mis en œuvre pour un développement durable.
